Easy Mala Necklace

Easy Mala Necklace

Cool mala-style necklaces have been all the rage for the last couple of years.  Whether you use your mala necklaces for chanting or fashion, it can be quick and easy to make your own.  Use our tutorial to get started, and then have fun creating your own gorgeous custom mala-style necklaces.  We can't wait to see what you make!

You will need:
6mm round beads (108) Ours are apatite beads.
Guru bead (1) We used a 3 strand cone connector.  You can use any cone or large hole bead.
5mm crimp cover
2x2mm crimp (2)
Tassel
Heavy SoftFlex beading wire (36 inches)
SoftFlex cutter
Needle nose pliers

String a crimp onto the wire.  Pass the wire through the loop of the tassel and then back down through the crimp.

Use your needle nose pliers to close the crimp.

Use your SoftFlex cutters to cut off the excess SoftFlex wire just above the crimp.  Insert the remaining SoftFlex into the bottom of your guru bead.

String on your 108 beads.  (This is the traditional number for a Buddhist mala.  Use any number that is meaningful for you, or to reach the desired length.)

Pass the SoftFlex back down through the guru bead.  String a crimp onto the wire.  Pass the wire through the loop of the tassel then back through the crimp.

Using your needle nose pliers, flatten the crimp.  Cut off the excess SoftFlex directly above the crimp.

Place a 5mm crimp cover over BOTH crimps and gently tap it closed.  Be cautious, as it's easy to dent or break crimp covers.

Your finished mala necklace will look like this:

Have fun coming up with your own versions.  Use different sizes of beads, work in spacers and various shapes.  You can use Stretch Magic elastic cording for a convertible necklace/bracelet option.  Just be sure to use knots and GS Hypo glue instead of crimps if you use Stretch Magic, as crimps can cut the elastic.  Let us know how your mala necklace turns out!
